Doula Services Agreement
As a birth doula, I accompany women in labour to help ensure a safe and satisfying birth experience. I have completed training approved by DONA International (Doulas of North America), Birthing From Within, and various one-day workshops and continuing education. I provide emotional support, physical comfort, and informational support to help you make the best decisions for yourself and your baby. I will provide reassurance and perspective to you and your partner, make suggestions as labour progresses and help with relaxation, massage, positions, and other techniques for your comfort.
I am independent and self-employed. As your doula I am working for you, not your care provider or hospital. I see us all working together as a team to help ensure the best birth outcomes and memories.
My role in no way takes away from or replaces the role of the partner. Rather, my presence allows the partner to be involved to his/her own comfort level and participating in this most amazing miracle- the birth of your child.
How I practice
Upon hire, we will schedule two prenatal visits before the birth where I will hope to gain an understanding of who you are and what kind of experience you are hoping for, so I can better support you. I will go over pregnancy, labour/delivery options, common interventions, teach you and your partner hands-on coping techniques, review your birth plan, and answer questions on breastfeeding and baby care. You will also have access to my lending library. I am available by call, text, or email throughout your entire pregnancy to answer any questions or concerns that may come up. I will go on call for your birth at 38 weeks of pregnancy and will remain on call until your baby is born.
Birthing From Within Childbirth Education
If you have chosen the Birthing From Within package, we will schedule approximately 12 hours of Childbirth Education. This can be completed in 6 sessions of 2 hours, 4 sessions of 3 hours, or a two-day weekend intensive. We will complete our series before you reach 36 weeks of pregnancy.
When to contact me
I encourage you to contact me any time you have questions or concerns, and after any time you see your care provider. I would like you to call me as soon as you are in labour, your water breaks, or you know you are going to be induced. This allows me to make my arrangements and be available when you want me with you. I usually need approximately one hour to get to you from the time that you ask me to come. Except in extraordinary circumstances, I or my backup doula will remain with you throughout labour and birth. Extenuating circumstances and refund policies are outlined below.
After the birth
I usually remain with you for one to two hours after the birth, until you are comfortable and your family is ready for quiet time together. After the birth, we will arrange a postpartum visit to see how you and your baby are doing, to review the birth, and get feedback from you about my role. I can also provide any information and resources you may need to help with your adjustment to parenthood.
As a doula, I do not
Perform any clinical tasks. I provide physical, emotional, informational support and advocacy as needed. Make decisions for you. I will help you get the information necessary to help you make an informed decision about your care. I will honour the plans you made for birth and will use that knowledge to assist you in making your decisions. Speak to the clinical staff on your behalf. I will discuss your concerns with you and suggest options, but you or your partner will speak to the doctors, midwives, and nurses.
As your doula, I can help you prepare for your birth, but I cannot guarantee that your birth will go as planned.
If you plan a vaginal delivery and a caesarean birth is performed after the onset of labour, I will continue to provide support during the caesarean birth (as allowed by hospital policies) and immediately after. If the doctor performing the surgery does not allow me as your doula into the operating room, I will remain at the hospital and come to assist you immediately following the birth. If I am not allowed to accompany you into the operating room, I will provide an additional 3 hours of postpartum support in the form of housework, baby care, breastfeeding help, etc. In this scenario, my full fee applies and no refund will be given.
If you and your care provider decide that a planned caesarean birth is necessary (before the onset of labour), I will provide support before, during, and after the caesarean birth, as well as an additional 3 hours of postpartum support as outlined above. If I am not allowed to accompany you into the operating room, I will provide an additional 3 hours of postpartum support for a total of 6 hours. In this scenario, my full fee applies and no refund will be given.
Failure to provide service
I will make every effort to provide the services described here. If failure to attend your birth is due to my error and no backup doula is provided, I will refund all fees, minus the retainer fee.
If my failure to attend your birth is due to an error on your part (failing to call me, for example) no refund will be given.
If my failure to attend your birth is due to a rapid labour (baby is born less than one hour after you ask me to be with you), I will provide an additional 3 hours of postpartum support. In this scenario, my full fee applies.
Any other circumstances out of my control that result in my absence at your birth will be addressed on a case-by-case basis, and may or may not result in a full or partial refund.
If you choose not to call me, and give birth without my assistance, no refund will apply.
My full fee for the services described above is
paid as follows:
$525 NON REFUNDABLE retainer fee, due at the time of contract signing. You will receive an invoice upon submitting this agreement. This will book your place in my calendar for the month of your due date and will ensure that I am available to go on call for your birth. This also covers any support prior to going on call for your birth, including access to the lending library.
$525 remainder of fees due when you reach 38 weeks. You will receive an automatically generated invoice at the time this payment is due. I am not on call until the 2nd payment is made.
Any discounts or promotions do not apply to the retainer fee; they will be deducted from the second payment. In all circumstances, the retainer fee remains the same.
By selecting "I agree" and entering my name below, I certify that I have read this document and agree to its terms and conditions. I agree to make payments in accordance to what is set out in the agreement.
